Problems After Neuromuscular Dentistry

Non-Invasive and Non-Surgical Mouth Reconstruction with Jawtrac® Alignment and Venlay® Restorations

Treating Patients in Los Angeles, CA from All Over the United States and the World

Medically Reviewed by Sam Muslin, DDS, MAGD | Last Updated on 06/26/2023

This patient was being treated by a prominent neuromuscular dentist for a full mouth reconstruction to correct her bite. The bite reconstruction dentist was experienced and lectures for a respected dental continuing education organization. But, with the best of intentions, sometimes the treatment turns into a disaster. She hopes you will not make the same mistake.

Deep Overbite, Small Chin, Facial Collapse and Veneers

The patient was in severe pain with infected teeth, a deep overbite, teeth that were so temperature-sensitive that she could barely eat. She had TMJ pain, jaw pain and pain in infected teeth. She had been in this condition for over 8 months and had gone back to her dentist about six times to get help after the bite correction dentist ground down all of her teeth. Porcelain veneers were placed on her 6 upper front teeth and 6 lower front teeth and the teeth were extremely sensitive to cold after the veneers were bonded. She traveled from Montana to Santa Monica desperate to find comfort.

Mouth Reconstruction with Veneers vs VENLAY® Restorations

Before and After neuromuscular dentistry problems corrected with the Face Lift Dentistry® method.

In the “before photo”, the shape of her face is short and round like that of a much older person. In the “after photo” on the right, her face is supported, the overbite was corrected, facial wrinkles are reduced and the new jaw position and the shape of her face help her look 15 years younger. Mouth Reconstruction – Why It Can Fail

For 8 months, this patient had unbearable TMJ pain, severe pain in her teeth, was taking antibiotics for infected teeth, had extremely sensitive veneers, a deep overbite and was considering drastic measures. She will tell you her story which is highly informative.

Porcelain Veneers vs VENLAY® Restorations

This patient had severe TMJ pain and facial collapse from a deep overbite that the cosmetic dentist was trying to correct with veneers on the front teeth and porcelain crowns on all of her back teeth. Porcelain veneers cannot correct the bite while the miracle of the VENLAY® restoration is that they were designed specifically to correct bites non-invasively.

FaceLift and the Dental Face Lift®

Unfortunately, the shape of her face was not going to improve, the deep overbite was still present after placing the veneers and she still had a small chin and facial collapse. Her teeth hurt, her jaw hurt and she could barely function. VENLAY® restorations can correct deep overbites because they are designed for bite correction. Veneers are designed for just a smile. The Dental Face Lift® can do something that a face-lift cannot accomplish and that is improving the shape of the patient’s face and jawline. It gives the patient a facelift without surgery and without invasive porcelain crowns and veneers.

Face Lift Dentistry® Bite Correction Treatment

Dr. Muslin utilizes jaw position imaging to determine the new bite position. Once he sees this position, he will know how much more or how much less he can correct her deep overbite. Then the new bite and new jaw position is tested so we know the treatment will work before the final porcelain restorations are bonded.

All of the new veneers placed by her previous dentist were removed as well as all of the 16 temporary crowns on her back teeth.

All new temporaries were constructed to test the new bite. Within a week or so, the patient felt “a million times better”. Her jaw pain was almost gone; all of her teeth were desensitized with Dr. Muslin’s bonding method that eliminated her tooth sensitivity, two back teeth that were infected were removed and two dental implants were placed. Within three weeks the patient was almost totally pain-free so all of the new porcelain restorations were placed.

Dr. Muslin uses a high tech ultra-low radiation exposure method to see the jaw position of the patient. He will see the existing jaw position, then the jaw position at rest and then the new jaw position he has designed because instead of guessing, he can see what he is doing.

Reversing The Effects of Aging

In the before photo, she has a deep overbite that makes her face look older, short and round and the overbite causes facial collapse. In the after photo, every one of her health problems and aging issues were reversed in just three weeks with Dr. Muslin’s custom made temporaries, while the porcelain was being constructed. She went home with custom temporary teeth made chair side by Dr. Muslin and returned three weeks later; nearly completely pain-free to complete the treatment.

Why Are Teeth Sensitive After Porcelain Veneers, Fillings and Crowns?

When the invasive types of veneers were done (the teeth were ground down and temporaries were placed) and the patient has tooth sensitivity after the veneers were bonded, the sensitivity comes from the inside of the teeth.

Usually, the dentist is unsuccessful in getting a complete bond in most cases, so the patient has a cold shock to their teeth when they have a cold drink. This becomes very uncomfortable and very annoying. Dr. Muslin experienced this problem over 20 years ago and was determined to solve this problem in his office.

Root Canals and Sensitive Teeth

For many patients, they still are having problems and then they usually get root canals to remove the sensitivity. The root canal was the wrong treatment most of the time because if the veneers were removed and bonded properly, usually the tooth sensitivity will go away. Occasionally, when the tooth becomes so inflamed by the procedure, a root canal is necessary.

This patient experienced extreme tooth sensitivity with all of the temporary crowns and veneers. But, once the permanent veneers and temporary crowns were removed and the teeth were desensitized with Dr. Muslin’s method, all of the sensitive teeth were no longer sensitive. This patient, for the first time in over 8 months, had no pain, no sensitive teeth and did not need a single root canal.

Neuromuscular Dentistry, Anti-Aging Dentistry and Cosmetic Dentistry

Most dentists that Dr. Muslin has met are sincerely trying to give the very best treatment to their patients. They take continuing education and are giving their very best effort. But, just about any dentist can call himself or herself a neuromuscular dentist. No training is necessary. Any dentist can call himself or herself a cosmetic dentist without any training. Any dentist can call himself or herself an Anti-Aging Dentist without any training. So, the terms cosmetic dentist, neuromuscular dentist and anti-aging dentist could mean almost any kind of treatment.

The Face Lift Dentistry® Method is a Defined Method

But, only one dentist can call himself a Facelift Dentist® because Dr. Muslin invented the method and created the non-invasive VENLAY® restorations for bite correction that requires no tooth grinding. He has defined the treatment goals and he created the method and continues to perfect the method. Face Lift Dentistry® has meaning, a definition, goals and a protocols to complete this treatment. His method has results that are clearly visible to the entire face of the patient.

Full Mouth Reconstruction vs Face Lift Dentistry®

Many patients get full mouth reconstructions without any improvement to their faces. Far too often, the dentist grinds down only some of the teeth, puts porcelain crowns on some teeth and veneers on the front teeth but never achieves the Face Lift Dentistry® level of bite correction. This dentist feels strongly that he or she is doing a full mouth reconstruction but other dentist may disagree.

Some dentists even advertise that they are doing dental face-lifts® by only treating the 10 upper teeth. You cannot give the patient a real Dental Face Lift® by only treating 10 of the patients 14 upper teeth!

The problem is that full mouth reconstructions can vary widely between dentists. The reason that the Face Lift Dentistry® Method was trademarked was to give the term real meaning rather than let it be just another meaningless marketing term.

TMJ Pain, Can’t Open my Mouth, Lock Jaw

She had a bit overbite, severe overbite and could not open her mouth. This is called lockjaw or trismus. She went to a neuromuscular TMJ specialist and he drilled away her tooth structure causing severe pain. When the dentist grinds down healthy teeth to correct the bite, he or she also looses all relationship with the patient’s original bite. This dentist missed the bite position completely causing bite pain, TMJ pain and tooth pain.

TMJ or Neuromuscular Dentist Expert

The best way to know if you are really going to be treated by a TMJ expert is to look at the results of their work. The same analysis is necessary for a neuromuscular dentist expert. If they do not have before and after photos and patient video results, you may be considering going to the wrong dentist.

Dentists Can Cause Overbites

A dentist can cause an overbite by grinding down your teeth or by using braces and extracting the teeth. It is very important to under stand that overbites can be caused by dentists and they can also be caused by genetics.

Mouth Guards, Orthotics, Bite Guard

When a dentist gives the patient a mouth guard, the problem is not being treated. Orthotics and bite guards only treat the symptoms and not the actual problem. The problem with TMJ Symptoms are usually caused by overbites.
