Jaw popping can be painful, and it also can be loud when chewing so people near you can hear it. It can be triggered and usually caused by a bad bite that forces your jaw into a position that does not match up with the normal function of the jaw joints.
Jaw joints don’t click and pop if the bite position allows the lower jaw to fit in the socket of the skull in a normal position. This is called TMD, or temporomandibular dysfunction, such as clicking, popping, and painful jaw joints, which are signs that there is damage to the joint.
