Can an Under Bite be Treated with Dentures?
Dr. Sam Muslin Answers: Underbite correction involves the difference in jaw sizes. The lower jaw is larger than the upper jaw and if the patient needs dentures an underbite can definitely be treated if the dentist understands the biomechanics of underbite correction with dentures.
“OverDentures” are a great way to add stabilization to underbite dentures because an over dentures snaps on to a dental implant or snaps on to the root of a natural tooth. OverDentures are more stable than regular dentures but again the choice in dentists is the key to success.
There is a huge difference in the skill level and ability between dentists and as I have seen in my practice, the patient’s are choosing the dentist based on price or getting a “good deal” when they are really getting work that ultimately is unsatisfactory.
With underbite treatment and jaw size discrepancy, using some type of snap on denture device adds stability to the bite and will help the patient eat their food more effectively. In the end, it is all about the ability to chew for the denture patient.
