Does the idea of going to the dentist make you shy away in fear because of the drills and pain often involved? I completely understand. Luckily, new technologies are being developed and used in dental offices all over that are drill-free (and almost painless). Laser dentistry may be the key to better oral health for everyone.
When I think of lasers, I think of sci-fi movies with futuristic weapons. However, lasers are fairly common now and not some futuristic technology.
Lasers are better dental tools than drills for many reasons. Drills create annoying vibration, pressure and heat and usually require a shot to numb the area. They can also crack or fracture teeth. Lasers do none of these things and are virtually painless. They also offer a much higher level of precision, which preserves more of the healthy tooth around cavities or other issues.
Another benefit to laser dentistry is that it results in fewer visits. Since numbing isn’t necessary, multiple procedures can be done in one sitting.
While lasers have seen some use in dentistry since the mid 90s, there still hasn’t been a laser system that has met the ADA’s approval, though it’s likely only a matter of time. Could this be the beginning of a new era in dentistry?
