Dr. Ben Young has written the book on flossing. No, seriously, he wrote an entire book dedicated to the benefits of flossing. Most people in the dentist’s chair get reminded to floss, because, really, who among us who aren’t dentists floss like we should? Dr. Young decided that a little literature on the subject might shed some light on how important the topic really is.
“The Joy of Flossing” weighs in at about 40 pages, so it’s a quick read for any of us who doubt the benefits of flossing. Dr. Young’s book has already gotten a positive reaction from colleagues clamoring for copies to give to their patients. This brings up a good point though- with various dental diseases still running rampant in adults and children, why isn’t the average person flossing enough? Why does it take a book on the subject to spur us into action? Dentists reminding their patients to floss more is such a stereotype its become a joke in various shows and comic strips, with the characters always ignoring the advice to their peril. With so much evidence to support it, and the costs of dental disease- both monetary and physical- how can we afford to continue to ignore it?
