Happy New Year! Is attaining better oral (and general) health on your resolution list this year? It’s on mine, and a great way to get started is to fill your home with delicious foods that aren’t just healthy, but can actually help to naturally whiten your teeth.
The bleaching processes used for home whitening can leave gums irritated and sensitive, and if used too frequently they can actually darken your teeth and dissolve the enamel. Before investing in whitening products and procedures, try eating your way to a healthy, bright smile!
Strawberries are a great choice, since the malic acid works as an astringent to remove tooth discoloration. The citric acid contained in citrus fruits can work at the surface of your teeth, but drink water afterward to prevent too much acid erosion.
Seeds and nuts are abrasive and can scrape away stains and plaque, and the crunchiness and water content of apples, celery, and carrots help remove stains, debris, and bacteria. Broccoli florets work even better – they’re like little scrubbies for your teeth.
Finally, make sure you’re getting enough calcium from foods like yogurt, or drink milk. You’ll have a dazzling, healthy smile in no time!
