Your smile says a lot about you. If you’re afraid to smile, that says a lot too.
Smiling decreases blood pressure, lifts your mood and increases endorphins. If you’re embarrassed by the state of your teeth from poor oral health, you’re missing out on some great benefits psychological and physical benefits. Unfortunately you’re also probably on a path toward disease.
It’s not entirely your fault. In a recent TEDx talk, dental health professional Steven Lin talks about the importance of oral health care and why it’s a big issue. People are more afraid to visit the dentist than they are the doctor, largely because of old stigmas. The current system is based around reactive treatment, but the focus needs to be on prevention. Dentists are friends, not enemies.
Nearly half of all children experience tooth decay. That is unacceptable. The high cost of care and continued misinformation are a problem, but armed with technology and the power of social media, people now have access to the information needed to create positive change in our health care system.
